The first hard frost is a signal: winter is close. A few simple checks now can save money, feed and worry later.
- Walk your fields and yard. Note the low spots where water sits — they freeze first, and they flood first in spring.
- Check stored grain and feed. If a bin feels warm or smells musty, air it out. Spoilage starts quietly.
- Drain what must be drained. Hoses, sprayers and water lines can crack when leftover water freezes inside them.
- Look at fences and gates before snow hides the problems. A loose post is an easy fix today and a hard one in January.
- Plan your alerts. Our free app shows tonight’s frost risk for Prairie towns in plain words — HIGH, WATCH or LOW — using Environment and Climate Change Canada data. It is free for every farmer, always: prairieecotech.com/app
